Goal Setting

Each year the teachers look at their professional lives and set some goals for themselves for the current school year.  Sometimes these goals are big and lofty, like creating a new unit or adding something into the curriculum for their students to try.  Some goals are more personal, like not taking any work home or going to observe another teacher's classroom once a month.  Goal setting is important in helping everyone grow and giving us something for which to strive.  It may be that you do not achieve the goal that you set for yourself, but like any destination, we often learn more in the journey than we do when we reach the final destination.

Regardless of the goal, the goal-setter should come with a plan to try to achieve the goal. You need to think of the things you need to do to make your goal a reality.  This year, one of the goals that I had for myself was to try something new to challenge my students and make their work more authentic.  This is how this blog came into being.  Slowly I am challenging myself with this new technology and will soon be asking my students to do the same by posting their replies online.  It takes some learning on my part, and some thinking for both my students and me.

So, as we are talking about goals, what are YOUR goals for the year?  What goal(s) do you have for your academic life?  What are specific things you need to do to achieve this (these) goal(s)?  What goals do you have for your personal life?  What are specific things you need to do to achieve these goals?  Let's hear about them!  What goals do you think your parents might have for you?

    1. These are great goals. Now you need to figure out specific steps so you can achieve them. What will you do to help yourself with each of these?

    2. My plan is to practice reading like in the history book or from the library or read everyday things like newspapers and magazines. My plan for division facts is to some nights get out flash cards at home and go over them like 2 times. Last plan for my goals is to really give full attention in Spanish class and look in my spanish book and say the words a couple times.

    2. That is a great goal, especially when middle school is right around the corner. ;) Just study in ways that are fun and educational, like if you are studying math, measure sugar and bake a cake, or measure out fluid ounces of soda and then drink it. ;)

  7. For my goals, I will try to become sort of good at speaking spanish. I want to do this because that means me and my stepmom can secretly plan things while my dad is wondering what in the world we are talking about. That would be so cool! I need to try this thing called studying first. It will be hard but I'll try my best anyway. But studying is hard! So I think I will just try putting all my movies from Netflix in spanish mode then put on english subtitles. Seems the most easy way.

    1. That is a good idea to learn a lot of spanish and then your dad doesn't know what you are saying. I might have to steal your idea and talk in spanish with my brother. So my mom and dad can't understand us.

  18. My goals are simple and diffuclt. My first goal will be quite hard for me but I will try my bes.t So my goal is to try to keep all my school work neat and organized and not overflow with stuff. I will do this by cleaning out my binder and locker at the end of evry week. Also will not shove everything into my binder and locker I will put everything in neatly. This year, since I don't have a desk, it will be easier to clean things out. But it will also be hard because this year I've got a lot af more stuff. So I will try my best!
